Overview
Emerging from the landscape as a monumental gateway to the west end of MSU's campus, “Victoria” celebrates the victory of academic achievement. Constructed of polished stainless steel pipe, and PVD coated stainless steel panel, the sculptures (7) spear-like forms are harmoniously joined giving the structure an appearance that is naturally Spartan spiritual.
Goals
Close attention was paid to the scale of the artwork, as its role as both entry gateway and iconic symbol were vitally important. The artwork re-connects the main urban thoroughfare through the center of MSU's campus and is highly visible from long distances. The ability for the artwork to engage visitors and invigorate the urban experience were the primary reasons for my selection for this project.
Process
Michigan State University's Public Art on Campus committee was instrumental to the success of this project. A series of design meeting's were held to discuss the most ideal location for the art to have the most profound urban impact. A design collaboration between myself and the campus landscape architect resulted in a successful site responsive art project.
