Overview
A part of the Bloomberg Asphalt Art Initiative, located on the corner of E Little Creek rd. & San Antonio Blvd Norfolk, VA. The mural is about 1700 sq ft, painted with exterior acrylic paint.
Goals
This mural is located in the Denby Park neighborhood in Norfolk, VA; an area that is often overlooked and hasn’t had the best reputation over the years.
The main goal of the Bloomberg Asphalt art initiative is to create safer and walkable streets. The central themes of this project include strength, growth, connectivity, and community. The shapes are towers that touch the sky.
They all lean on each to symbolize community and working together to
reach new heights.
Process
This project was commissioned by Norfolk Arts in partnership with The Boys & Girls Club of South Eastern Virginia, the Norfolk Police Department, and funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies. I responded to the open call and was selected to submit 3 proposal designs. Once the final design was chosen, a call for volunteers was put out. The project took 2 days to paint with the help of those volunteers as well as a few Norfolk Police officers.
