Overview

The Windows on Arts Alley reflect the industrial history of the area with the new bright colors of the future. Primary colors are on the front and back with secondary colors on the sides of each 6 foot square towers. As one walks around the colors will over lap visually creating secondary and tertiary colors. With the light of the sun the colored resin reflects Mondrian type patterns onto the walls and paving of the alley creating a cheerful and inviting area for people.

Goals

The Windows on Arts Alley were designed to mark the entrance of a revitalization of an alley into a pedestrian friendly outdoor market with entrances to restaurants and other business.

Process

Judy Sutton Moore worked in collaboration with the architects and project manager for Montgomery County. The artist created scale models of each sculpture along with detailed shop drawings. The engineers were able to make signed drawings using the artist's models and drawings. The fabrication of the stainless steel was done at Maryland Metals in Hagerstown. The resin was cut and shipped to the fabricator where the artist attached the ¼ thick sheets to the stainless steel wire cloth on the sculptures. The sculptures were trucked to Silver Spring. The installation was a complicated process of lifting each stainless steel unit over a 3 story building and down into the alley. All was safely accomplished with the coordination of the artist, fabricated/installer and the crane company.
