Overview
Minarc’s Phoenix House consists of a combination of eclectic and calming design elements all put together to create a one of a kind space and experience for the client. The house Is gracefully situated in sunny Studio City, Los Angeles. Collaborating with the client, the design team created a beautiful sanctuary, personalized by art pieces, artful indoor plants, and Buddhist shrines. The residence offers functional open spaces, balanced with large windows for cross-breeze ventilation and strategic natural lighting. Minarc firmly believes in the power of blending the natural environment with living interiors and its ability to lift one’s spirit; the Phoenix House is no exception. The Phoenix House receives its name from withstanding two tragedies: the passing of the client’s husband, followed by a fire that burned the house down during construction. The powder room includes personalized artwork from Minarc owner, Erla Dögg Ingjaldsdottir. One is a striking black sand wall with accents of moss, inspired by the landscapes of her and the client’s backgrounds– Icelandic and Hawaiian respectively.
Goals
The goal for the artwork was to create a physical piece of art that encapsulates the feeling of growth in the face of tragedies occurring. The powder room artwork from Minarc owner, Erla Dögg Ingjaldsdottir is inspired by the landscapes of her and the clients' backgrounds - Icelandic and Hawaiian respectively. The landscapes and overall theme of growth shown throughout the Phoenix house interconnect to create the powder room artwork of a striking black sand wall with accents of moss. This artwork serves as a motif to remember important memories connected to the individuals you have lost due to tragedy. Along with being an artwork that emphasizes the connection between an individual's cultural background and the permanent support system you obtain from your cultural roots when tragedy has occurred.
Process

The residence offers functional open spaces, balanced with large windows for cross-breeze ventilation and strategic natural lighting. Minarc firmly believes in the power of blending the natural environment with living interiors and its ability to lift one’s spirit; the Phoenix House is no exception.
The clean facade offers an inviting entrance through an artistic gate of cement and dark wood. Welcomed by a cozy front patio of sustainable plants and landscape design, one is invited through an expansive front door. The spacious kitchen has a theme of white and light wood, contrasting the dining area filled with personal works of art.
