Overview
8ftH x 5ftW oil paint on clay-formed canvas. There are 4 paintings in this project. Each in a different location in the building. They represent the four seasons and differing conditions and qualities of light.
Goals
The site is an elementary school. So there was the desire to create work that was accessible and that had an educational component. The subject matter derives from a local natural creek setting. Additionally, in the “Winter Solstice,” painting constellations of Washington DC night sky can be seen.
Process
The locations were predetermined. Working with the interiors architect we determined the best size for the paintings given foot traffic and wainscoting.
Additional Information
The project was developed around one of the stated architectural themes. Light and it’s differing qualities through season and time of day changes. And it’s properties of reflection, color and transparency. The same landscape location is used in all four paintings to show the relative differences of light effects. Similar to Monet’s Rouen Cathedral series.
