Overview
Designed to activate a depressing railway underpass location, the work uses light to transform the appearance of the sculpture in accord with surrounding light levels. Composed of painted steel and a concealed LED light source.
Goals
As with all of my public artworks, the concept is a response to site/sight. The existing location was at a triple road intersection beneath a dark and depressing railway overpass. The goal was to activate the space but equally to provide a metaphor (“stitch”) to acknowledge the three neighbourhoods which intersect at this particular road intersection.
Process
Ultimately works of this nature require the close collaboration of the City engineers department but equally my own team of structural engineers and project managers. A close relationship with fabricators is equally critical.
