Overview
Spanning 13m and 6m tall, “Spectrum” is an immense light sculpture that welcomes visitors to the hotel. LED square pixels creates a dynamic canvas underneath a constantly flowing water curtain over a reflection pool. Spectrum metaphorizes personalities through playful depictions of light spectrums, forms and movements. At times the light sculpture is intimidating and harsh, whilst at other times it is soft and organic.
Goals
The goal of the artwork is to develop an generative system of art which reflects the ever playful personality of the W brand. Situated at the hotel entrance, it is one of the main factors contributing to first impressions of guests. By having a system which generates different results all the time, it is the first step into the world of W where things are ever surprising and interesting.
Process
Spectrum was conceptualised by Multimedia People Pte Ltd in response to the brief from W Hotel Singapore. I was commissioned directly by Multimedia People as a programmer & artist to develop the software. Parameters on an user interface were tweaked through a collaborative process with Multimedia People and W Hotel Singapore. These serve as points of reference for systems of animation which can generate different results all the time. All three parties worked together to refine and deliver the piece through various rounds of prototyping and feedback.
