Overview
Sparkle City Mini Putt is a 9-hole, permanent, locally-themed miniature golf course that occupies 5000 square feet of a formerly vacant lot in the heart of downtown Spartanburg, SC. This course is a new model is that it is completely free and open to the public. People are encouraged to bring their own ball and putter or to rent them for free (in exchange for a valid ID) from local businesses in downtown including: The Coffee Bar, Growler Haus, The Local Hiker, Dottie’s Toffee and the Paisley Paw.
Goals
Robin Schwartzman, who was an Artist-in-Residence at Hub-Bub (a local non-profit arts organization), designed the holes and graphics and oversaw the construction of the course. She commissioned local metal workers Josh Moore and Kevin Belue of K Riley Designs to fabricate the obstacles. Local artists Russell Bannan, Aimee Wise and Eli Blasko assisted in all the painting of the curbs, obstacles and mural on site. Minneapolis-based artist Yousif Del Valle was commissioned to cast a small bronze sculpture for the course.
Process
Robin worked closely with a local non-profit, private businesses and the City to complete the construction of the course. These include: Hub-Bub, Johnson Development Associates, Inc., The City of Spartanburg, McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture, Clayton Construction Company, Inc., Blackwood Associates, Inc., Lavender Smith & Associates, Inc., Parks Engineering Associates, Inc., Blanchard CAT Rental, Parker’s Carpet One, and Roebuck Wholesale Nursery and Landscaping, Inc. Local artists were commissioned to fabricate and paint the obstacles for the course.
