Overview

Reflecting Within Us is designed to create a wondrous world for those visiting the waiting area. Comprised of over hundred intricate shapes hanging from the ceiling, the aerial sculpture floats above, circumventing the room along a one hundred fifty-foot perimeter. The mirrored surfaces of this site-specific sculpture interact with ambient sunlight coming from windows to create an interplay of reflected light and delicate shadows upon adjacent architecture. Cut from highly polished stainless steel, the shapes form various silhouettes recognizable in nature. Birds, trees, and water intertwine into a landscape traveling fantastically throughout the clouds. This whimsical scene encourages personal interpretations, inviting each viewer to participate in its open-ended meaning.

Goals

Create an aerial sculpture to delight the clients of Zev Yaroslavsky Family Support Center. The sculpture was designed to have a 50+ lifespan.

Process

I was chosen out of over one-hundred applicants for this public art opportunity for the County of Los Angeles. I oversaw this multi-year project from start to finish, and over to pandemic shutdown of 2020. All the cutout shapes were designed in-studio by first hand cutting paper.
