Red Rocks was created for the Utah School for the Deaf and Blind. Our challenge was to create a dramatic, site-specific artwork that included a range of interactive activities that would this engage this audience.

The school was designed by Jacoby Architects, specialists in designing buildings for special needs children. To this end, the spaces, colors and textures are designed for optimum function, as well as for beauty.
A 35-foot long nook was allocated for public art. Our goal was to create accessible art that would complement the architecture and bring interactive art to this community.

We worked with the Directors of both the School for the Deaf and for the Blind in order to create effective interactives. We worked with the architect, so that the colors and forms would enhance the building. This synergy was key to creating an integrated and effective artwork.

Additional Information

The installation includes many tactile interactives including a large-scale push pin cactus, petroglyphs and fossils. The sound interactives feature local animals. There is a black light cave, and a fiberoptic waterfall for full-body experiences.
