Overview
This was an open call for artists to create an “Urban Tree” to be installed at the pier in San Diego for one year. Thirty applicants were accepted. We had to create our idea in a scaled miniature model for the application process. My urban tree, Nature's Berth ultimately stood 14' high, with a width of 5.5'
Goals
There were very specific requirements for the accepted artwork. The design and fabrication had to meet specific details; ie: 7' above ground could not be "climbable", no sharp edges, family friendly and pier related themes, as well as being able to withstand weather conditions. My overall design was based on ships coming into their home port, and likewise, ants and butterflies docking on their home port.
Process
The Port of San Diego authorities trusted that I would be able to design, fabricate and ship this monumental piece from New Jersey to California in just five short months
Additional Information
Nature's Berth can now be found at The San Diego Children's Discovery Museum.
