Overview

This was a dream project. The residence is a 6,000 square foot custom home located on Longboat Key, FL and overlooking gorgeous Sarasota Bay. The water view was brought indoors by developing a tropical ocean motif to carry throughout the home. Asked to address any area in the house which would normally feature commercial, ceramic tile, Architectural Ceramics designed and hand-produced tiles and murals for both indoor and outdoor spaces: kitchen, summer kitchen, pool, outdoor shower, spa, master baths for both him and her, pool bath.

Goals

After the architecture, integrating the art work was of primary consideration. With the Bay as our muse, we approached the kitchen, seen from the entire living, dining, and outside lanai area, with simple 4x4, hand-cut tiles that appear to reflect the water views. The “Her” bath, secluded for privacy, became a whimsical spa of corals and fish. To delight the grandchildren, the playful pool bath abounds with sea creatures “swimming” from the floor to shower. The pool, spa, and outdoor shower are in a cool, classic palm motif. Each installation is unique, while contributing to the theme of the vibrant life in and around the Bay.

Process

We began with new construction, excited clients, and a contractor and interior designer who we have collaborated with on several projects. Our meetings were most often on site. Our ideas changed, always for the better, throughout the project. The clients were very involved, but at the same time allowed huge freedom of design; we worked very closely with the designer selecting colors; and the contractor made installation simple. Again, a dream project!
