Goals

The light installation for the I-77 Bridge over West Trade Street creates a volume of light in an urban area that was formerly seen as a barrier between the 3rd Ward and Biddleville/Wesley Heights neighborhoods. The public is invited to delve into a pool of light that dramatically changes the concrete and steel bridge passage.
The installation uses twenty long-range narrow LED spotlights to illuminate the steel girders on the underside of the bridge, twenty LED flood lights to light up the concrete embankment on both sides and twenty round LED spotlights to cast circles on the evenly lit concrete embankment.

Process

The commission was awarded after an open competition. Design was by the artist. Engineering was done by Barbizon, On-site installation was executed by a local contractor.
