Overview
Client family, age range 15-55, uses room for playing music and reading and lighting challenges were: Provide ample illumination for reading, Source dramatic decorative fixture, Accentuate a three-dimensional art feature. Our concept uses combination of indirect and directional luminaires to provide ambient and task lighting without risk of glare on windows or visual clutter in the contemporary environment. Seven white globes, suspended at various heights, create a connection between the high ceiling and the living space. Art feature becomes an interactive lighting experience. Wall-box dimmers encourage decreased energy use and increased lamp life; control system was beyond budget.
Goals
The custom “Suspended Moons” fixture is designed with one low voltage halogen lamp per globe. The globes evoke an elegant cluster of pearls, strung above the grand piano, when unlit. Illuminated, their warm, harvest moon texture surprises - especially when dimmed in simultaneous contrast to deep blue grazing of the art wall. An RGB, linear LED fixture was specified to graze the art feature in a colorful and playful way. The original specification included integration of fixtures at both top and bottom of the feature; the fixtures for the latter were eliminated due to budget constraints. The simplicity of the wall-mounted controller encourages the family to enjoy “light play” for dramatic effect.
