Overview
Recreation of two marble statues of J. Gutenberg and B.Franklin destroyed during earthquake in 1906
Goals
Based on existing historical photographs and other available data recreate new statues as close as possible to missing originals.
Process
Based on University archive and historical investigations, Oleg Lobykin created clay and plaster models of the statues for the university's approval. Carrara marble was selected for the work. Lobykin traveled to Italy several times to complete the sculptures. He and Italian carvers roughed out the figures using traditional methods and hand tools. The process was the same as it was done over hundred years ago except computer automated roughing out for Gutenberg statue.
