Overview
The commission was for a suspended kinetic sculpture in the atrium of the new Business Education Center at LSU university. Width 20 feet, height 13 feet, to be viewed from student Commons, ground floor, and from successive ramp balconies, which open into all the classrooms.
Goals
The sculpture was to hang below the Ideation Lab, and reflect some of the moving colors of the rotating stock market ticker tape. The integration of art with a prominent business icon was an aim of the university.
Process
The architects selected the location of the sculpture, and programmed the contractor to build access to the supporting beams in the ceiling. The engineer calculated all the loads and specified the shaft sizes and the design of the attachments to the beams.
