Overview
Conceived and built by internationally recognized sculptor Rein Triefeldt, the Kaleidoscope butterflies were designed to be larger than life. Their aluminum wings impress with a special, iridescent, color shifting paint. The sculptures soar over a landscape of carefully selected plants that attract living butterflies. Consultation with Butterfly World near Fort Lauderdale and The Endan- gered Species Laboratory University of Florida in Gainesville helped choose the four species to be represented. They are the “Malachite” (Green), “Gulf Fritillary” (Orange), “Tiger Swallowtail” (Yellow) and “Zebra Longwing” (Black & White).
Goals
The Kaleidoscope butterflies have landed.
Landmark public sculpture wows visitors to the Port Everglades Administration building.
Port Everglades, a major gateway for international trade and cruise vacations in Florida is now home to four enormous butterfly sculptures. Commissioned by Broward County Cultural Division, these colorful butterflies open their wings to remind tourists and eco-visitors of the unique aspects of the resource center and its commitment to green and sustainable practices.
