Overview
The hanging chair “Dropi”, located in the lobby of Reykjavík, Iceland ION City Hotel was custom designed by Minarc to offer a playful resting place for the weary traveler.
Goals
Dropi means raindrop in Icelandic and that was the influence of the chair. We felt like we needed to emphasize the high ceiling in the lobby and we wanted something hanging from the ceiling that also created a playful retreat ambience. The Dropi appears to descend in free fall from the ceiling, showered by yards of fabric that gently cradle the softly curved seat of molded metal.
Process
The lobby’s Dropi, the teardrop seat posed an exciting challenge for us. Erla Ingjaldsdottir, artist and designer behind the chair, wanted to fashion a seat that gave the sensation of flying in the air looking like a drop falling from the sky about to hit Earth. She collaborated with Scot Brown who was the metal-artist to help create the steel in the chair.
Additional Information
The overall design of ION City Hotel is to bring the beautiful Icelandic nature to the city of Reykjavík. The Dropi chair, suspended like a solitary drop of falling rain, is a part of this concept.
