General Mitchell International Airport – Flight Over Wisconsin
Terrazzo tile floor with hand-made tile, brass, and aluminum inserts
26,000sq ft, $100,00 Year 2006
GMIA Airport /City of Milwaukee WI

When we were awarded this project as we proposed turning the entire concourse floor into a journey one Wisconsin. We designed the terrazzo floor with brass leaves and shapes of clouds, airplane shadows, green patches of " Farm Land" and Lakes 15 cut out circles of sizes varying from 3' diameter to 15'. The circles are like Pop Up views into the life of Wisconsin, there are Harley Davidson, Industry, Indian Map, Sports, Ice, Fishing, Architecture, Festivals and La Calatrava Museum and more.

I work with my wife and partner JC Carroll for over 20 years. When we were approached by the firm Enberg Anderson Architects to create the floor for Concourse "C" at the General Mitchel International Airport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. We wanted to represent Wisconsin so the traveler feels like they are immediately immersed into the areas offerings. We worked closely with the Airport Authority to provide a floor that they could be proud of. We also know as avid travelers that often you are stuck in airports for hours and we have had so many people reach out to us that they were so involved looking for more mosaics to discover it helped pass the time and boredom away !

Additional Information

This project took 5 years to complete. As they were renovating an area at a time we would come up and install the mosaics after our terrazzo design was complete in each segment/
