Overview

This project is a large scale remodel of an existing 3000 sq. ft. home. The impetus for the design scheme “gallery house” was the client's desire to house and display their growing collection of works by emerging artists. The implementation of the design involved removing key walls to create light filled open spaces, and the selection of large format stone to create a calm, gallery like interior. Minimalist detailing was designed to create planes of wall to display artworks to their best advantage.

Goals

The materials scheme was key to creating a gallery feeling, in order to accommodate commissioned artworks and new acquisitions. White walls were alternated with pale gray plaster walls which define architectural elements and provide a simple backdrop for art display. Commissioned artwork was planned for the stairwell and completed and installed on site by the artist. Furnishings were primarily selected in neutral tones to allow for the changing art exhibits. A limited palette including Italian stone flooring, color integrated concrete fireplaces, and classic italian marble for baths was selected. Bath fixtures minimal and sculptural.

Process

The art consultant worked closely with the designer designating certain artworks for various spaces, and the interior continues to evolve, as new art is collected and added. The clients passion for supporting and collecting the works of emerging artists keeps the space fresh and lively.

Additional Information

Every time I visit there is a new addition, so in that sense the house really does complete its design goal as a "gallery house".
