Client: American Real Estate Partners

Overview

The lobby is stark white with white glass and limestone walls and marble floors. The client requested a bright colorful piece of wall sculpture to brighten the space and compliment the architecture. The client saw a piece I did for another client,The National Superconducting Laboratory at Michigan State, and wanted a piece from this series. The wall is 20 ft wide and in front of a wheelchair ramp. I played with breaking the perpendicular grid and worked with the slanted partial wall in front. The oil painted copper panels warms the space.

Goals

The goals were to enliven the space, work with the stark contrast of the architecture and make a piece that was visible from the street through the glass door. Using the raised panels gave dimension to the work and a greater presence to the lobby. The building has just been redesigned and update throughout including a total remake of the facade and retail spaces in front.

Process

I worked directly with the client and art consultant. The architects and designers were not part of this process although they provided a beautiful space with amazing attention to detail.

Additional Information

The wall sculpture is made from 26 separate copper panels. Each is hung individually and stands off the limestone 2 1/2 inches giving a drop shadow and feel of dimension along with the bold color.
