Overview

The impetus for the project was to design an entryway sequence to the Festival of the River. The project is 218 feet long and covers an existing pedestrian bridge to Brown's Island.

Goals

From the brief we knew it was temporary piece, so permanent alterations could not be done to the existing bridge. The theme of the festival was the James River and Music. We chose to incorporate the reflection of the water under the bridge and brought the light up to the full height of the bridge. The catenary arches resemble a 3-dimensional sound wave that was taken from the score of the featured composition played by the Richmond Symphony over the course of the weekend.

Process

I worked with a landscape architect, Angelike Angelopoulos of Seamon Whitesides in Charleston, SC. Public works in the city of Richmond, Venture Richmond, 1708 Gallery, and the Richmond Symphony were also involved.
