Overview
I created an installation for Sprint's Prow Art Space curated by Cheryl McGinnis for the wintertime. The installation was custom for the space and was created using colorful hand cut origami paper snowflakes layered with different vinyl and plastic and strung together with fish wire.
Goals
I wanted to create something playful and fun for viewers to appreciate while they were walking by a busy intersection in the center of Manhattan. This spot is across the Madison Square Park and inside The Flatiron Building- so it had to be special! I wanted this to be something everyone could appreciate and enjoy. It was a temporary exhibition and some nights dancers were invited to perform within the space.
Process
I began working on this before it was granted to me. I had stacks of hand cut origami paper snowflakes build up from the past. When I met Cheryl, the curator, we knew we were about to make magic. Since the pieces I used could easily be hung together we were able to fill the space entirely rather quickly. One night there was a giant snowstorm and a photographer came and shot the pieces. It looked like everything was aligning- art, curator, building, photographer, weather. The project worked out well and made many people happy to look at.
