Overview

A renovation and addition to the oldest synagogue in Pensacola required some wow to the new space. The new sculpture resides on the upper mezzanine outside the entrance to the temple. The sculpture is illuminated from the interior and projects colorful patterns of light on the walls and ceiling. The footprint of the sculpture is 12 feet long by 28″ deep. The glass panels are over 7 feet tall.

Goals

The goals included designing a piece that was at the entrance of the main temple and to serve as a conversation piece in the lobby area.

Process

Our design team collaborated with 2-3 lead coordinators on the project. Numerous sketches and concepts were presented and the final concept of Moses parting the Res Sea was selected. The kiln fired panels are all hand painted high tem enamels that were fired multiple times at over 1400 degrees to obtain the correct shape. The hand sculpted metal bases have a patina finish and support the 11 panels. Moses and his rock are also kiln fired glass on a metal armature.
