Overview
The is a permanent installation in Hobby Airport, Houston. Commissioned by Southwest Airlines and Houston Civic Art and Design. It is a glass mosaic, 6.5′ x 36′ in length, installed in 14 panels, 3′ x 5′ each. We used a mirror backing with an archival epoxy resin to compose the mosaic. Completed in 2015.
Goals
I was given a beautiful space in the Entry lobby, across a large wall of glass, with full light exposure. We used a mirror backing as the base for the mosaic to take advantage of this light and let it influence the piece. It is exciting, to see how when moving past the piece, it changes, with the reflections of the people walking by, and yourself.
Process
Working with Southwest and the Airport System was fantastic. They requested 2 proposals yet allowed me to favor one because I felt it worked beautifully with the natural light in the space. So they let me run with it and they were very pleased with the installed piece.
