Overview

Inspired by the TAMU Institute of Biosciences and Technology, a visual study of memory(an essential trait that allows learning and the accumulation of knowledge) is suspended between three floors in the main stairway. An engram is an imprinted unit of cognitive information, theorized to be the means by which memories are stored as biophysical changes in the brain, in response to external stimuli. Engram explores this notion of a “memory trace” through abstract interpretations of fragmented bits of stimuli, originating from various images. The images are distilled down to their very basic essence; light, color, and composition, thereby expressing a re-emerging imprint of an experience.

Goals

The artwork needed to be integrated into the three-story stairwell as well as the hanging light fixture hanging from the top floor. It was important that the pieces were colorful, yet semi-transparent to let natural light pass through as well as very linear to feel vertically continuous.
