Overview

This glossy white elliptical staircase is truly a marriage of sculpture and architecture, providing a highly integrated site-specific experience, while still serving its architectural purpose. A stunning focal point and the primary centerpiece for the home, it has plaster walls and a soffit that envelop the staircase by following the same geometry. The graceful lines understate the complexity of the form. Subtle details like the knife-edge top to the ribbon banister become more dynamic as one approaches. The thick wooden treads seem to float with glowing reveals to further elevate the experience.

Goals

The goal of this project was to integrate an elegant complex shape within a small footprint to unite three floors of the residence in a downtown Chicago skyrise.
