Overview

The Columbia Center Project was a design concept consisting of lobby enhancements using LED lighting sculptures that could be viewed from all angles
and receive generative weather data and output corresponding video clips. The
concept was for each sculpture to be made using the same LED fixture though
it would be configured in (3) distinctly different configurations. This added to the
challenge of a fixture that needed to be hung in a variety of orientations, diagonal,
horizontal and vertical directions. Additionally the time-frame from concept to
prototype development to final installation was a very tight two months.

Goals

Our solution to this challenge was to work with our local fabrication and engineering
partner in Brooklyn NY to manufacture a 360º viewable 15mm pitch, fully
addressable LED strip, housed in high-temperature-resistant diffused acrylic. This unit was mechanically designed to accept structural rigging points from either end and to be fully replaceable as a single unit. We installed an overhead rigging structure for each sculpture which was designed to accommodate difficult installation logistics, house power and data components and to provide simple serviceability for the life of the installation.

Process

ESI Design designed these unique chandeliers in the three atriums of this building and proposed it to their client. They turned to us to assist with the creation of this custom LED fixture solution and with a talented team made these chandeliers interactive and respond dynamically to generative content.
