Overview

The Carrington art feature connects multiple facets of one of Calgary’s newest communities. Inspired by nature, the tree-like structures are designed to evoke a stand of Aspen trees – a species that is usually the first to take root in an emerging forest. This pioneering spirit represents the residents of the Carrington community who are settling the new development for the first time. The interconnected leaves of the art feature, which greets residents at the Gateway to Carrington, represent the interactions and shared experiences to be found in the park.

Goals

Mattamy Homes wanted to do something special right out of the gate for their new community, and they knew that art was the way to do that. Many home buyers look for communities with large amounts of park space within walking distance and they look for amenities like the artwork at Carrington. It was very important to build something that was eye-catching, and would attract people off all ages.

The area includes a skate park, play structures, green space for soccer, half basketball court, granite walkways, benches and a plaza.

Process

Using Plan-Build™, Heavy Industries collaborated with NAK Design Strategies and Mattamy Homes to bring their unique concept of a gathering place to life. Carrington’s 0.9-hectare Greenway Park is home to the iconic art feature, along with a skatepark, playground, half-court basketball court and gathering plaza.
