Overview

A trio of whimsical bicycles that when ridden, activate and play mechanical instruments contained in the column to which each bike is attached. David and Michael were tasked with designing an artwork that would engage the evolving community that is emerging in the “Linen District”. The goal was to encourage spontaneous interactions between participants through the expression of music.

Goals

Interactivity was essential to us as it invites visitors to engage with each other using a common device that was prevalent in the community: the bicycle. The city wanted to encourage visitors to the Linen district by creating a signature piece that would reflect the character of the area and create an identity.

Process

We work closely to design and manufacture our work. Our complementary skill sets and common fascination with mechanisms allowed us to prototype and experiment through a variety of techniques. This lead us to the ultimate goal of building an interactive and robust interface that could handle the elements, the use and potential abuse of the visitors and be an aesthetically pleasing work of art.

It has been a popular destination and the city is extremely happy with the final project.
