Overview

Mill Creek Residential engaged the services of Artsource Consulting to implement the Public Art requirement for their residential development. This luxury apartment community is comprised of 126 apartment homes over a two-level podium on approximately 1.2 acres.

Goals

For the city of Walnut Creek's Public Art requirement, the art needed to be visible and accessible to the public at all times. Due to the limited space in the public right away in front of the building, the two-story glass facade became the ideal location for the art.

Process

The artist, Leo Bersamina worked closely with 3Form as well as LPAS architects to develop a piece that fit into the existing store front window design. Evening lighting was also an important consideration to keep the artwork viewable at night. The team worked closely to perfect a backlit wash of light on the upper deck to mimic the lit environment downstairs.

Additional Information

Artist Leo Bersamina has memories of golden rolling hills peppered with twisting Live Oak trees from his youth. For this project he spent time in those hills drawing both Oak and Walnut trees that would then be translated to archival paper prints that emulate wood veneer. These prints were then pressed between glass and fitted into the storefront windows in the building architecture. The artwork brings the natural surroundings into the rapidly developing downtown of Walnut Creek.
