Overview

Virtual animation was an important element of this utility box to add interaction with the sidewalk visitor. This is the 3rd utility box I created in Sacramento, CA and I wanted to elevate the experience by adding a component of interaction with people passing by the box on the sidewalk. “Apparatus Naturalus,” represents California’s natural working world in harmony. The California Dogface butterfly, California Quail, Helianthus annuus, and California redwoods represent different elements on each panel that come together on the “machine” sidewalk panel side of the utility box. The image was created digitally and vinyl wrapped on utility box. Larger panel sides are roughly 5.5′ high x3′ wide. Top panel can bee seen when looking down from windows in adjacent buildings.

Goals

To elevate the experience of visitors by creating an interactive element. An element of virtual animation was added by creating a QR code that visitors could scan with their smart device to download an app and view the animation.

Process

This is the 3rd utility box I created in Sacramento, CA and I wanted to elevate the experience by adding a component of interaction with people passing by the box. I worked with the city to work outside the parameters of the project to create an interactive experience.

Additional Information

The box is near the capital of California and located next to California Museum. I choose to create imagery that reflected California and Sacramento. The use of patterns was designed to help camouflage possible graffiti and colors chosen to have better longevity of colors.
