Overview

LinkedIn wanted a statement wall in their lobby that incorporated and a large custom LCD screen. The desire was to create something expressive and exhibiting technological aptitude while also remaining warm and inviting.

Goals

Working with the design team at Acrylicize LTD, DEKA developed the texture of alternating layers of CNC routed wood to imply a rippling dynamic surface and house the metal-framed screen. The screen's hidden custom support hardware allows for it's removal and access to a compartment door containing all the electrical hardware that feeds graphic content to the screen. The piece was brought into the space for installation in 15 pieces in order to fit into the service elevator and attached the studs in the backing wall at various points. The vertical edges on the sides were custom set to match the non-straight nor plumb vertical edges of the wall's corner and the door frame. An optimization script in Python was written to subtly shift the geometry of the wall's wave pattern to allow for more efficient nesting of each layer on the stock lumber and minimize material waste.
