Overview
Granite, 32” h. x variable. Three sculptures composed of stone slabs paired with an exact equal weight of boulders inhabit a new public space for the BC Parliament. A statement acknowledging that we are gathered on indigenous territory is engraved in the paving as a well as a “welcome statement” in the language of the Lekwungen First Nation people. Maps engraved on the tops of the slabs show the Victoria BC region, pre-European contact, & today.
Goals
The artwork elements create moments for sitting, gathering, reflection and passive play for this very public space in downtown Victoria, and were carefully considered regarding use, circulation and relationship with the surrounding architecture.
Process
Worked closely with the Lekwungen First Nations community of the Victoria region to craft a project that reflects their community and history. Also worked closely with the landscape architect and client on the work's integration.
