Welcome to the July issue of CODAmagazine, where we share the best in design + art projects from all over the world. The magazine is published twelve times a year by CODAworx. We’re an online community for artists and design professionals to showcase their work, collaborate with one another, and earn recognition for their projects.

MICRO-Double Helix, submitted by Scottsdale Public Art

Art that requires the interaction of the spectator is the organizing principle of this month’s issue. Interactive art is a new genre of artwork that is in high demand; we see artists and designers engaging their viewers to create unique, playful and personal experiences with the art. CODAmagazine documents this trend; we have selected 25 evocative projects that are certain to delight.

These collaborative projects are dynamic and participatory, and only accomplish their true purpose through interaction. Some creative professionals integrate sensors so that the artwork responds to motion, heat, meteorological changes or other types of input. For a great example of this, check out Sidewalk Harp, Jen Lewin’s interactive musical instrument, which requires the movement of community members to create a symphony of sound and color. Other projects are literally large-scale urban installations. My personal favorite is MICRO-Double Helix, commissioned by Scottsdale Public Art for the Scottsdale Waterfront.

Interactivity as a medium produces meaning. When an artwork is interactive, each observer participates in the creation of the work, which is completely unique to that observer. This has resulted in a large number of commissions for festivals and other large community events, where citizens are engaged in the creative process – and become true collaborators.

It’s a spectacular collection. We hope you will find these projects delightful and subscribe to CODAmagazine on Flipboard to receive the best design + art projects from all over the world, delivered to you, free of charge, each month. We look forward to sharing these incredible collaborations with you!
