Overview

Youngstown Flats is includes 193 spacious apartments with cityscape views in addition to 11 live/work lofts in a 70,000 square footprint. Located in the Delridge community of Seattle, which is home to acres of open space, parks and recreation and the Youngstown Arts Center, a cultural hub of West Seattle.
Designed with tenant amenities in mind, the roof features a deck, a P-Patch garden and planted green roof. The building also has a ground-level dog run and dog wash station, bike storage with maintenance area and a theater room with gaming systems, as well as a comprehensive curated art program.

Goals

We wanted the art to provide not only visual interest, but a sense of community. Rather than purchasing ‘off the shelf’ art items, we set out to incorporate art into the architecture and design of the building with unique and customized work that related to the diverse setting of the neighborhood.
We intentionally started early with the art program to allow for pieces to be incorporated into the design of the building using the theme “Life Unframed”. The art is part of the design both inside and out. The program includes interior common spaces such as the residential entry lobby, corridors, exterior walkways, and landscaping.

Process

Under the curatorial direction of Sara Everett, a team including the developer, landscape architect, project architect and interior designer went through an exhaustive open call process whereby we received over 100 submissions for artist proposals for Youngstown. After many long meetings, we selected the final 15 artists you see in the project today.
