Overview
The stained glass facade was commissioned for the main stairwell of a mixed use development in central London. The project was commissioned by developers Land Securities with architects, Justice Whiles. The glass artwork wraps around the lift / stairwell tower connecting the two facades of the building.
Goals
The artist, Kate Maestri and architect, Jestico Whiles collaborated closely to realise a public artwork that sits seamlessly and works in harmony with the architecture. The design for the stained glass responds to the pattern of the copper cladding on the main facade, creating an artwork that is fully integrated within the architecture. The design of the glass also allows for the panoramic views from the building to be retained.
Process
The stained glass decoration was achieved using a screen printed ceramic enamel as part of a double glazed unit. As the building is South facing the artist collaborated closely with architects, engineers and Pilkington Glass to create a glass artwork that limits the solar gain within the stairwell.
