Overview

Interior light installation with programmable white LEDs by Erwin Redl
566 x 123 x 102 ft / 173 x 37 x 31 m (L x W x H)
Royal Caribbean Cruise Line Terminal, Miami, FL

The immense spatial volume of the terminal becomes the primary medium of the installation. Charging the emptiness of this space with an all-encompassing aesthetic meaning by elegant, minimal means is the objective. The 650 white, cylindrical light fixtures appear to be placed random at first but then unfold as precise delineators aligned to the building’s axes and the grid of the enormous glass façade. Various undulating light sequences unfold over time to illuminate different aspects of the architecture. The visitors are invited to explore the space by meandering through the building. Their presence is part of a performative unity as they interact with the movement of the lights.

Goals

Making artwork and building inseparable
