Overview

Sunny Side and Shady Grove. The works recall the dense vegetation of rural Kentucky and give the users of the hospital a familiar and comforting image. (2) 9′ x 9′

Goals

It was important to the hospital that there was a stunning work of art to greet visitors upon arriving and entering the elevator lobbies, and that the artwork should be familiar, colorful, and engaging. It was also important that the art integrated with the palette of the surrounding marble and terrazzo.

Process

It was important for the hospital to have the artist's work in the hospital. Several sites were explored with the architectural team, art selection committee, and artist. After examination, many of those sites were determined not to be suitable. At last mosaic for the elevator lobbies was commissioned. The artist then coordinated with the construction team on the lighting and substrate backing.

Additional Information

This was the artist's first mosaic commission. There are approximately 50,000 individual pieces of glass smalti in each artwork, all carefully selected and laid by hand to render the artist's painting into mosaic.
