Overview
For the atrium at the new Dominion Energy Headquarters Prentice Colbert designed a cascade of reflective aluminum elements to float in the space and reflect the changing light during the course of the day. Hundreds of the elements are clustered in three “clouds” or banners each of which are free to rotate individually according to the whim of the invisible convection currents in the space. The reflecting elements increase in size as they descend in the space suggesting a waterfall or some other source of energy found in nature.
Materials are Aluminum sheets and tubes and Stainless Steel wire.
Dimensions are 50ft high x 28ft wide x19ft deep.
Goals
As Dominion is an energy company, they were interested in commissioning a site specific kinetic sculpture to animate their central three story atrium space. The sculpture was to be viewed both from the inside of the building and from the streetscape.
