Overview

Tongva Park is a 6.2-acre site bounded by Main Street, the future Olympic Drive, Ocean Avenue and the I-10 Freeway. Inspired by the Southern California arroyo landscape of washes and ravines that once defined the site, James Corner Field Operations created a series of braided pathways appearing to organically emerge from the footsteps of City Hall, extend west to Ocean Avenue, and weave the park into the fabric of the City.

Goals

The park represented an opportunity to create a significant work of public art in a prominent location-- one that contributes to the overall Civic Center area as a destination and as a major cultural focus for Santa Monica. Therefore the City felt that it was imperative that an accomplished artist be commissioned to be an integral part of the project team from the very beginning of the design process.

Process

Internationally renown artist Inigo Manglano-Ovalle was an integral part of the project team and worked closely with James Corner Field Operations to create Weather Field, No. 1, a site-specific sculpture composed of 49 telescoping stainless steel poles aligned in a grid.
