Overview

In a residential library the fireplace provides a weighty anchor for an elliptical-shaped space. The room is a haven of warm tones, richly tactile textiles, tooled leather, and richly aniline stained woods. An extensive book collection shares the space with the owners collection of Greek antiquities.

Goals

The fireplace surround was designed to express the homeowners love for literature and the philosophic arts. It is the focal point for the room, drawing visitors in and encouraging them to closely examine the many intricate details found in the carvings, over mantle, and custom firescreen.

Process

The fireplace surround was a close collaboration between the interiors designer and the architect (who designed and sketched the fireplace surround in detail). They worked with the wood carver (who carved and stained the mahogany surround and overmantle), the stone mason (who cut the fire box surround and hearth), and the artisan (who created the leather faux book spines on the over mantle) to create this one of a kind piece.

Additional Information

The fireplace screen, specifically designed to complement the library, is a classically inspired piece fabricated from stainless steel with bronze details. Series of arches are supported by finely twisted steel "columns". the "capitals" are polished bronze. A fine steel mash protects the room. The surround features the names of both philosophic and literary giants in raised lettering.
