Overview
Public art requirement for private development. Stainless steel and dichroic coated glass sculpture commissioned by Peery Arrillaga for a new office building at 479 N Pastoria Ave, Sunnyvale, CA, measuring 9′-9″ x 12′-0″ x 6′-6″.
Goals
The city of Sunnyvale's public art ordinance requires the dedication of 1% of construction costs for new commercial buildings for public art. Some developers elect to contribute to a pubic art fund for use by the city of Sunnyvale in lieu of commissioning public art for their projects. Peery Arrillaga typically prefers to commission some form of public art for their projects.
Process
Studio Winterich worked closely with the architect, art consultant and developer while creating this site specific sculpture. Of particular interest to the team was the history of heavy machine industry in Sunnyvale. During the early and mid-20th century, Sunnyvale was know as the home for the fabrication of heavy machinery for Navy ships, mining equipment and hydraulic projects in the western United States.
Additional Information
Due to the arrangement of shapes, light, color and voids, perception of space in this sculpture fluctuates. At times, a hovering illuminated blue prism appears at the sculpture's center. Walk around the piece and the colored prism flattens, changes color and disappears.
