Overview

Three sculptures were designed for this park located near an Everglades wetland. A grant, plus matching funds from the city of Plantation, FL provided children’s playground equipment. Using vertical space, each sculpture ranges in height from 10- 20 feet high and 6 feet wide. An abstract alligator and dragonfly are anchored at each end, with “Windsong” in the middle suggesting wind, waves, water, sky, palm fronds….and all things Everglades.

Goals

Fulfilling a grant written by the Landscape Architect of Plantation, Florida, , the criteria for this project was to create sculpture in a park including playground equipment that evoked the Everglades and created sound with the wind. Without the attraction of artwork, this would have been an ordinary park.

Process

Working with families of the community including children, each person created sculpture with materials provided by the artist. We met once a week for several weeks, and the resulting sculptures were critiqued by all. Based on the results, I created Dragonfly and two additional artworks became realized sculpture in this park as well.

Additional Information

Commissioned for the second time by the Landscape Architect of Plantation, Florida,. two additional environmental sculptures, “Windsong” and “ Allapatah,” were designed in the same process. All three sculptures are installed in an expansive grassy area in the center of the park surrounded by colorful play equipment. The sculptures can be viewed all times, and serves as a visual interaction with the children as they play.
