Overview
This project is an installation of nine elements along the Third Street Promenade, a walking street in Santa Monica. Each of nine art elements are a kind of overlaid physical drawing highlighting features in the environment. When the viewer is in alignment with the piece, it forms a perceptual tracing of the three-dimensional object beyond. These brightly-colored metal “drawings” present elements from the site in a playful and engaging way. They call our attention to moments in our environment.
Goals
The goals of the project were to add playful art elements to the Third Street Promenade- a commercial public space, and to call attention to overlooked elements in the environment. This simple gesture created a temporary and unexpected aesthetic experience in this heavily-used public space.
Process
We worked with LeBasse Projects, the curator, and the Santa Monica Arts Commission to determine the sites for each of the "drawings." The process involved a lot of discussions and coordination with Downtown Santa Monica, the organization that oversees the public realm of the Third Street Promenade.
