Overview
For a rooftop lounge at a times square hotel, where stanev potts provided the overall architectural design as well as interior furnishings and fittings, the client wanted to create a feature wall that would connect the indoors to the outside roof terrace. Stanev potts proposed a custom slated wall with integrated strips of backlit acrylic, made of shou sugi ban or charred pine boards in custom panels.
Goals
In our role as architect and artist, we were able to carefully and completely integrate the proportions and spacing of the slatted panels with the floor plan of the lounge, proving invisible access panels for building components, and completely hiding a full door into a hidden full kitchen, where staff can prepare beverages and catering services. Since we were also designing custom furniture and millwork, all the elements came together in an integrated vocabulary.
Process
The client was a key collaborator in the design process, brainstorming with us about materials and ideas. The shou sugi ban vendor, a great millworks facility located in Austin, Texas, was also a key partner, proving material for a full size mock up panel pro bono, and working with us to customize the char of the wood to our specification.
