Overview

Seating Nest is a functional, climate conscious sculpture which invites viewers to step inside and enjoy the work from within. Repurposed from scrap steel propane tanks, it is comprised of seven vertical elements circling an inner three spoke seating surface. Commissioned for newly constructed Blake Apartments, the work stands 8 feet tall with a 7 x 10 foot wingspan.

Goals

This sculpture introduces human-scaled, biomorphic forms to an outdoor entry plaza to create a welcoming sense of place and provide some counterbalance to the mass and clean lines of the building background. Like all of Colin Selig’s work, the sculpture is designed to engage the public and foster climate awareness.

Process

In association with Washington DC art consulting firm Artists Circle Fine Art, the artist created the work at his studio in the San Francisco Bay Area using regionally sourced tanks. The tanks were carefully dissected and reassembled, with no additional reshaping of the material, a process with a minimal carbon footprint which produces durable objects that contain a high percentage of post-consumer reused content. The only new metal used was the six foot diameter base. The sculpture was coated in a high quality urethane paint and shipping across the country by train.
