Overview

The sculpturally integrated Column Plates and terminal Benches, located in a gathering area for both arriving and departing passengers in the new terminal, create a visual distinction for the various activities taking place in the open space. Echoing the sculptural forms of The Canyon walls, the columns will provide interest and induce a sense of wonder while maintaining visibility of the view corridor. Benches inspired by the Column Plates will be placed throughout the area. Both installations will be made of composite materials and function as seating as well as sculptural elements.

Goals

The goal of this project was to continue the theme of bringing the outside in, with functional artworks that also serve as benches and/or columns. Column Plates and Benches continue the ambience of the Utah landscape along with The Canyon to create a true sense of place for visitors to Salt Lake City.

Process

This project involved in-depth collaboration with airport executives, the architectural firm on the project - HOK, design teams, fabrication companies, etc. With such a large-scale project, many professionals came together to make such a big idea into a reality.

Additional Information

Column Plates and Benches are part of a much bigger plan for the airport, including seven large-scale, structurally integrated artworks. The entire 10-year project is included in the Airport Redevelopment Program, a $4.2 billion redevelopment of the entire airport including 2 new concourses in which Huether's artwork is integrated.
