Overview
The owners enjoyed their 2200 sq.ft. cottage in Carmel, California. Determined to build to the same square footage, but stay within the building footprint, the result was a greatly increased sense of volume and indoor outdoor relationship. The team abstracted the principals of boat building, utilizing built- in furniture to conserve space fully opening window walls to expand spaces, and illuminated art glass screen walls.
Goals
The artworks were meticulously and seamlessly integrated into the interior and exterior of the project. A "nautical" palette of glass elements and screens representing forms of water, shipbuilding woods including teak siding and flooring, dossier paneling, stainless steel , waterproof plaster and stone completed the material palette.
Process
The project required intensive collaboration between all disciplines, architectural, construction, interior design, lighting design, landscape architect, glass artisan, woodworkers and clients. Each played a significant role in the project which was highly detailed and compact.
Additional Information
A seemingly small beach cottage can really fool you. This chameleon can be a cozy beach hideaway, or expand to accommodate a large party and like undersea animals, transform itself.
