Overview

Bullseye Studio collaborated with the artist Lynn Basa, Bullseye Glass Co., Mosaika and TriMet to translate artist paintings into glass mosaics for nine stations along the new Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail’s Orange transit line for a total of 1600 SF of mosaic on 118 columns. The nine different paintings by the artist each represent the history of each station’s neighborhood.

Goals

The goals were to translate artist paintings into mosaic on 118 columns properly and with meaning for both the nine specific neighborhood light rail stops as well as the general public. The colors chosen, the application methods used, and the histories reflected in these columns have significance to the overall design in that they are of the neighborhoods and for the neighborhoods and bring a wealth of community reflection to both passersby and waiting pedestrians. The columns also represent an important voice in contemporary art today, and demonstrate our City’s joy and deftness with hand-made serious craft.

Process

Lynn Basa, having won the TriMet commission, hired Bullseye Studio to translate her paintings into mosaic artwork. Bullseye Studio collaborated with Bullseye Glass Co.'s glass factory to produce custom sheets of colored glass to capture the palette and mark-making of the paintings. The special production glass was cut and assembled by the artisans of Bullseye Studio in Portland, OR. Bullseye Studio's ability to execute this public project successfully in mosaic was made possible by the training and consultation of Canada-based Mosaika.
